the shadow of betrayal

...Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, “Very truly, I tell, you, one of you will betray me.”

...When (Judas) had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.”
~ John 13:21, 31

Although it was over 20 years ago, when I think about the time I was betrayed by a co-worker, it still raises my blood pressure! I have (mostly) dealt with the bitterness and loss, but even now, in dark moments, the shadow of that bygone betrayal crosses my innermost being.

But let's look at Jesus! In the verses above, the Spirit speaks clearly to me: Jesus is supremely confident of God's sovereignty in this agonizing situation. Though Jesus is troubled in spirit, his response is to declare the glory of God, and to point the disciples (and me!) to the pivotal issue: God will use this event for his own glory.

In moments of betrayal, may we reflect on the powerful example set for us by Jesus. May we be encouraged that Jesus personally knows our experiences of anguish and confusion. May we recognize God's sovereignty in every situation, and with heart, mind and soul, may we declare the glory of God!
